Ruth Lyons - A no-nonsense kinda gal...
I’m not much of a “primetime” TV kinda guy but last night I remembered WLWT was premiering the Ruth Lyons Documentary. So, I flipped to 1005, (WLWT HD) and continued about my night. In less than 5 minutes I was glued to the TV. I found Ruth’s documentary was a success from the start – it captured everything that appeals to me, Cincinnati, Advertising and an authentic storyline.
The documentary portrays Ruth as an authentic, no-nonsense kinda gal. She wasn’t the type that waited for things to happen, she MADE things happen. Her company, product, singer, actor, and everything in-between endorsements were a small slice of advertising gold – everything Ruth loved was a success! She didn’t sugarcoat or hide facts from her viewers, she was truthful – a truthfulness that was the foundation to her success.
During the documentary there were many fact-filled stories but the one that resonated with me the most was a David & Goliath type story. P&G wanted our buddy Ruth to move her 50-50 Club show out of the 12-1:30 time slot so they could promote their soap. Ruth said, “no that’s when my viewing audience has time to watch…” after some “negotiations” P&G pulled their 50-50 Club sponsorship. The next day Ruth had a new soap sponsor (the name escapes me at the moment… but I think it was Fels Neptha) and within 6 months it was the best selling soap in the mid-west, which just happened to be Ruth’s viewer area.
What can we learn from Ruth? I think Ruth left us with this little gem – influence is a reflection of one’s character, loyalty and genuine approach to friendship.
